Excited and Scared

The classroom I am going to be teaching seems like it is full of some really great students. They all seemed very excited about participating in their various classroom activities, and were attentive and responsive to all forms of instruction given by their teacher. This got me excited because it will make it much easier for me to connect with the students if they are already prone to being excited by classroom material. I am also excited that this will be my first time teaching a full group of students, as well as an actual full length lesson. I would say most of my nervousness came from the unknown aspects of the classroom. What would the students be like? Would I be able to present material in a way that actually helps the students? However, there are many things that are helping me to take the right path. Frameworks will provide me with a guideline for teaching materials, and my first visit to the classroom showed me that the students are awesome. So in these regards I would have to say I am more excited than afraid. However, even though I am not afraid, I am definetly anxious. There are no real details that can explain my anxiousness, other than it is to be expected because this will be a "first time" type of event and anything you do for the first time is a bit stressful.

  2. Neil,
I am also glad that you like the kids in your classroom! I think that it is going to be much easier to connect to the students than you think. They are going to be so excited that you are going to be there talking to them and teaching them something new that it will be very easy for your to connect with them. If nothing else you will be interesting to them because you are a new face/ not their everyday teacher. I wish you the best of luck with your first lesson!!

  3. Neil, I like that you are not ashamed to admit that you are both really excited and really nervous at the same time. I feel the same way, I am so excited to start interacting with the students and to get a better sense of what being a teacher is going to be like in the real world, but it is that first step that is always the hardest and the most nerve racking! We are in a tough position right now because we are stuck in the middle of knowing what we have to do, but not knowing exactly how it is going to pan out when that first day arrives. Giving the lesson to an entire class in a manner that will get them to understand and remember the material makes me nervous because I am responsible for anything that they may have missed or misunderstood, but I think a lot of those nerves are going to fade away after that ice is initially broken, and we gain a better sense as to how the students are going to react to us as teachers in their classroom.

  4. Hi Neil!

I also have a tiny fear of the unknown! I'm really excited to finally get out there and show my stuff (since I started in the summer, I feel like I haven't really gotten to practice all the skills I have been taught). I'm a little nervous about the observation but I think we'll become so absorbed in the lesson that pretty soon, we won't even notice they're there. I'm excited to hear about your experience and I know we'll all have fun!
